Movie Review: In the Land of Women
In the Land of Women
My rating: 4/5 stars
I saw this movie last weekend in the theatres. When I first saw the trailer I figured it would be just another stereotypical romantic comedy, but something about it caught my eye. I had a free movie ticket so I went and saw the midnight feature of it. Without a doubt, I underestimated this movie.
The movie is about Carter Webb (Adam Brody), a young man from Los Angeles - a script writer, and like most of us, dreams of writing a book. After his girlfriend breaks up with him, he flies out to a suburb in Michigan to escape his life in L.A. and take care of his ailing grandmother. The grandmother is definitely the funniest character in the movie with some crazy antics that only old people can get away with. While there, he meets and becomes close to the women in the house across the street, all of which are going through tough times. Sarah Hardwicke (Meg Ryan), the mom, was just diagnosed with breast cancer and her daughter is holding a grudge against her (about something else)…
The movie is very simply about the lives of the family, Carter, and his grandmother as they grow closer and closer together. Don’t expect a lot of plot twists and turns - the movie isn’t about that. It’s more of a slow dialogue between these characters and what they learn from each other. It also presents human face to breast cancer awareness and how the disease can impact a family.
